WOODSTOCK, N.H. - When the sun goes down behind Kinsman Notch on Columbus Day weekend, the spookiness begins at Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves.

Mysterious by day, as Lost River tumbles over and under the earth on its downhill journey, the gorge takes on a whole new air with the approach of Halloween.

For the second year, Lost River hosts its guided Haunted Halloween Tour on the evenings of Oct. 10 and 11, beginning at 6 p.m. both nights and departing every 20 minutes after that, until 8 p.m.

The first two tours, leaving both nights at 6 p.m. and 6:20 p.m., will be appropriate for children.

"After that, prepare to be scared!" said Deb Williams, the manager of Lost River Gorge.

Guests should come prepared for a nighttime walk in the gorge - a sweater and sturdy footwear are a must. Fingerlights will be provided.
"It's one of the coolest things to be in Lost River Gorge after dark," Williams said. "It is really spectacular to see the caves lit up and to be experiencing something very unique."

A coloring contest is open to children in two categories: Ages 6 to 9 and 10-12 and the winners will receive admission for two adults and two children for the Haunted Halloween Tour.

Beginning Sept. 18, children can download the coloring page from www.LostRiverGorge.com or get a copy of it at the White Mountains Visitors Center, off exit 32 of Interstate 93 in North Woodstock.

The contest will be open for two weeks, all entries must be postmarked by Oct. 5.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $11 for children. Seasons' passes will not be valid for this special event.

Reservations are required for the Haunted Halloween Tour and can be made by calling 603-745-8031 or on www.LostRiverGorge.com.

Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves is owned by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and managed by White Mountains Attractions in North Woodstock.
